On Thursday, May 17th the Owls met 12th ranked Delta in the first round of sectionals. Both doubles teams (Hannah Flanagan/Catherine Dragiciu at 1 and Zelalem Temesgen/Jade Jameson at 2) finished at the same time, and quickly, both losing 6-0, 6-0. The next match to finish was 2-singles where Megan Dragiciu played Emma Snider well but lost 6-1,6-1 and the sectional match was decided.
At 1-singles, Isabelle Behrman battled Delta's Eleah Snider for the second time this season. Both girls played tense and the crowd was tense as well. Despite being down most of the set, Isabelle rallied to take the lead, but Eleah fended her off and sent the first set to a tiebreak. Isabelle took a commanding lead at 6-1, but lost the next 4 points before finally taking set point. The second set wasn't as close, and Isabelle clinched her second win, this time at 6-3.
At 3-singles, Sarah Heffner had a rematch of with Tynan Dishman, to whom she lost earlier in the season 1-6, 3-6. Sarah was determined to have a better result for her last match of the year and got one. She pushed the first set to a tiebreak, but lost it at 4-7. Then played a solid second set, winning it 6-4. The third set was full of long points, but finished in Delta's favor at 6-3. It was the kind of match that exemplified Sarah's tenure with the Owls. She turned a tennis match into a chess match mixed with a marathon, and fought to the end.
Isabelle continues on in the singles state tournament. The next round takes place in Marion on 5/22 and 5/23.
